Gainesville, FL The owner of two victories and a pair of NCAA provisional marks in the shot put this season, University of Florida sophomore Mariam Kevkhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) was named Southeastern Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.
Kevkhishvili garnered the honor after winning the women’s shot put at last Saturday’s Tom Jones Memorial Classic by more than a full meter. Her winning toss of 16.82m/55-2.25 was a personal best and moved her into fifth place on UF’s all-time indoor list. The mark also currently ranks second in the NCAA and 16th in the world.
An All-American in both the indoor and outdoor shot put a year ago, Kevkhishvili also won the event at the season-opening Big Ten/SEC Challenge with a then-PR of 16.65m/54-7.50.
Kevkhihvili’s award marks the second-consecutive week in which a Gator has been named either men’s or women’s SEC Field Athlete of the Week, as junior Beau Burroughs (Tampa, Fla.) captured the honor on Jan. 22. It is also the fourth overall conference weekly honor for UF this season, as freshman Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) was named SEC Runner and Freshman of the Week on the same day Burroughs received his accolade.
The fourth-ranked Florida men and the No. 13 Gator women return to action this weekend when the majority of the squad heads north to Lexington, Ky., to compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial. The UF multi-event specialists will travel to Boise, Idaho, to take part in the United Heritage Invitational.
