MORE HERE.........To recap, Spurrier said on Wednesday that he was working to get Sharpe’s permission to essentially “unretire” Sharpe’s jersey No. 2. Spurrier wanted Alshon Jeffery, a star recruit out of Calhoun County, to wear that number at USC.
Then, to compound the problem, Spurrier said USC planned to retire McKinley’s jersey No. 11 during the spring game in April. The number could still be worn by USC players, Spurrier said, but McKinley’s jersey would be honored.
Without considering the consequences, Spurrier ignited a firestorm of controversy. But before coming down too hard on Spurrier, it is difficult to fault a coach for thinking more with his heart than with his brain. That was clearly the case in both instances.
If you have an opinion about retiring a players Jersey vote in the poll above.
