I know I'm not the only one who's sorta been checking in, hoping Escambia94 will have started his "Countdown", in whatever form, to give us SOMETHING to "play" off of here until summer practice kicks in around late-June--not really fair on our part, I know...I mean, it's not like I'VE got much to offer right now. On a certain level, I guess "no news is good news" if it means our guys are staying out of trouble and hopefully "taking care of business", as the case may be. Could be this is what a team full of responsible, hard-working teammates looks like, as opposed to one overloaded with selfish headcases and prima donnas whose members keep finding trouble "out there". We'll see...Nice thought, anyway.
I'm not much of an NFL-Draft guy, certainly not like these people who hunker down with snack food and beer and follow it all religiously; 1 hour of Sportscenter last night to catch up with an overview was about my requirement AND limit. However, the one thing we can say, with the draft in its later rounds by now, is that Coach Muschamp's point about how, from both a coach's AND a fan's POV, where and how many of a program's players ultimately go in the NFL-Draft, after 4 years there, is a pretty damn accurate barometer of how strong the actual talent they had to work with was there at the time. Our string of "1st Round picks" finally broken, more than that it gives the lie finally and officially to those supposed "Top Rated Recruiting Classes" that it was said Meyer & Co. brought in 3 and 4 years ago. It wasn't just us, either: Being out here in Longhorn-country, it is interesting watching them come to terms with a similar reality (there have been a number of on-going similarities in our two programs over the last few years--interesting all the more in that Texas' "designated-Head-Coach-In-Waiting" jumped to the Gators how and when he did)--and having to watch players from many of their Big 12 rivals, especially QUARTERBACKS, going early while NO ONE from UT(west) is called. Much bitter and bewildered hand-wringing has ensued.
Anyway, that's about all I got right now. Anyone else? Anyone know how to fold paper-money into little Origami-football-players? I'm that bored and restless. I need Gator FOOTBALL!!!

(PS--I didn't have to watch long to find myself with steam hissing out my ears from immediate and repeated exposure to Mel "The Live (?) Wobble Head" Keiper, and the RE-realization of his absolute idiocy...this guy is so wrong so often, always hyping the front-runners his draft-junky-pals all feed each other, you gotta re-evaluate a choice that agrees with him even when he's just mouthing everyone else's follow-the-leader "conventional wisdom", right? Any such thoughts of your own?)

(PPS--As I watch some of the draft-related highlight-reels of various Gators from their UF-careers as they are considered and/or actually taken by teams here in the later rounds--on in background while I'm doing other things--I am struck once again by the thought that our OC's the last few years have been completely unimaginative FOOLS: Y'all know who and what I'm talkin' about here, too, Nameless and Weis each had their own "issues", shall we say? I mean, the Steelers, in need of help at RB, just drafted Rainey with the 164th pick, and watching his "reel" as the Steeler-fans oohed-and-ahhed loudly in the background was frustrating as it brought it all back...for one thing, you could TELL which regime a play was from, who had probably called which plays--a "best of" Dives and Bubble Screens That Worked, in the earlier years, then all improvising-in-the-secondary once he got a decent hole off-tackle or bounced it outside himself LAST season...Can you imagine what we MIGHT have done with a healthy and well-coached O-line, plus a proper mix of both the power and speed that WAS available to us had the OC ever managed to extract his head from his ample @$$ last season?!!)

Doldrums. 126 days to Gator football, so another 26 days until I start the countdown. Even the NFL Draft was boring. Janoris Jenkins at #39. Jaye Howard #114. Chris Rainey #159.

Sorry--all I've had to do is to "police" other sites' foolishness--and I'm long past bored with the futility of THAT...so I thought I'd throw out the above "reflection on our shared plight". Guess I'll have to find more patience SOMEWHERE. Meanwhile, I welcome ANY discussion and/or personal thoughts and/or observations from our regulars that might "keep us going" thru' these looonnnnnng down-days (as we get into the summer and preparations for the fall, I expect some of our "old friends" will begin to show up of their own accord--and soon after I'll begin to pester some of them as well, should we get to August without hearing from them--make sure all is well, and btw, "C'mon back!"--but in the meantime, anything the rest of us hear about, wonder about or note in the news is all fair game).

Aussie rules started a month ago, so I'm pumped about that. Love that game. Tough, athletic sons of guns, let me tell you.

CFL starts in a month or so, and I'm chomping (see what I did there?) at the bit to watch the Bombers in blue and gold bring the pain to the league. Should be a good, fast, team, with a defense that loves to hit, but loves the ball even more.

I don't watch hockey, so I'm of no help to anyone there.

Those were the only guys drafted? Demps would have been but he was training for London but won't be surprise if a team or two is interested after the Summer Games.

I don't think we get Aussie-Rules anymore anywhere on ESPN (not since a long ways back, when ESPN went bigtime), but I guess I'll look for some on the other, higher-tier HD-digital offerings--and we WILL have access to CFL games thru Versus (...btw, just read on web that Cris Leak is with Arena's "woeful" J-ville Predators now, "signed recently after much success and personal sense of achievement and loyalty with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes", according to the column...if they can get enough ex-Gators together on that team, perhaps they won't be so "woeful"--1-and-5 thus far on the season--anymore?)...anyway, welcome back FG--and maybe help bring us up-to-speed on Gators' (if any) presence on which CFL teams...
(PS Have you been around since robdog brought in a number of upgraded options and features? You can either fool around with some of them and use the ones that catch your eye, or (recommended) go back a month or so and find the threads he posted that introduced and demo'd them...some are handy, some are fun, all are cool and help to make an overall more responsive AND visually interesting site, don't you think?)

Wouldn't have surprised me if someone were to have taken him late--to have his rights once the Olympics were over. Actually, the fact that it DIDN'T happen makes me think perhaps the timing didn't "work" somehow--after all, Demps is a faster, more powerful and less-injury-prone version of Rainey in many ways, not an experienced "slot-receiver" as his backfield-counterpart was, perhaps, but without the questionable off-field antics either.

I'll renew my Gators (and SEC) in the CFL thread another time, once training camp is all figured out.

I'm surprised that's what it said about Leak. Here's the real deal on how it went with him: He was picked up first by Hamilton, who then traded him to Montreal as a third stringer behind Calvillo (who is now football's all-time passing yards leader with some ridiculous number like 75K yards), and former 'Nole Adrian MacPherson. He was hardly ever used in his 2-3 years there, and then was released. He was picked up by the Roughriders (boo, hiss), where he wasn't ever given a chance to compete for the 2nd string spot, in my opinion.

So, I don't know what "success" they're talking about, but if if were me in his shoes, I'd be more pissed off than relishing "personal achievement," as I really feel he didn't get a fair shake at any of the places he played. OR, he did, I didn't see it, and he didn't win out.

I love Aussie rules football, rugby league, and rugby union if I'm desperate. Right now I am in the middle of moving to Los Angeles, so no cable television for a while.

Bad journalism--no big surprise, I guess, but irritating, nonetheless: guess this way was "easy", play to the ignorance and "wishful thinking" of folks in Florida--and never mind the truth: ""Who cares? Who's gonna tell 'em different?" Only now I know, and no wonder I have so little trust or regard for most of the statements and claims that are made so easily and unchallenged online. I don't really even understand the point of the kind of "never-mind-the-facts" writing that passes for "sports reporting" nowadays; personally, I'd much prefer to know the TRUTH. So thanks...

Hey, not a problem. I wish I had different news to report, because I've always been a huge fan of Leak. I was disappointed he didn't stick around somewhere.

I thought the Ravens were a smart team, why take a chance on a QB who might play in the AFL next season and a guy could couldn't catch a cold like another dumb@$$ receiver who caught passes for Tebow for the Broncos?

I met a fellow Gator at work today. We overlapped during both, my stints at Florida. Small world.

The ocean view is obstructed by the June Gloom marine layer, but it keeps the temperature reasonable.

This is for the spring roster. They can have I think 72 on the roster until summer when it drops to 53. Brantley may not survive the cut which means he might need to get another job selling cars.

Apparently they either ignored or never heard Deonte's well-earned nickname while he was here...
So Baltimore, get ready to welcome your soon-to-be favorite drive-killer, destroying QBs' confidence and post-game statistics wherever he goes, "Cockfingers" Thompson!

"Small world"--and large "--Nation": I have met Gators all over the planet, in the most unexpected situations (often difficult, in retrospect, to remember how the subject even came UP). Hopefully, there will be some "hand-slapping" moments on Mondays when you pass each other, as the 2012 season moves along...
(Btw--you're in temp-transit housing on-base now, right? If you don't mind my asking, what area(s) are you focusing on to move to, eventually, if at all? If you like the ocean, don't mind a "bit of a drive" but get the impression it's all Malibu or Marina Del Rey, talk to me ("back-channel", if you like): all that time spent there, basically "a career", HAS to be good for something!)

DRU2012 I plan on staying on base housing, by San Pedro. This is the only way to afford living close to the ocean, yet still have room for two teenagers at home. I saw nice homes in Manhattan Beach, but they were not designed for families, or SUVs. There are other nice homes, but way too expensive.

Escambia94 I understand--and San-P as an alternative is a blessing, for the reasons you mention and more...However, if you ever get to thinking differently (OR somewhere up the line you think about STAYING out there--you'd be far from the first, especially once getting used to the climate and lifestyle), perhaps we'll revisit this discussion. Meanwhile, when you get a chance (especially when heading for the beaches , or just taking a drive DOWN (rather than up) the coast, check out some of the towns along PCH/Route 1 once you get into San Diego Cty. Each has its own character, and population it was aimed at when first incorporated--from upscale to bohemian to funky, not to mention a few that are downright friendly and inviting to military retirees (these tend to be dominated population-wise by Navy and especially Jarhead-types--with THEIR bases right there, after all--but they're nice, safe little towns, right on the ocean and the price-is-right, relatively speaking--and unless things have REALLY "gone-to-hell", you'll be surprised at the mortgage-loans you'll be able to swing in these situations: I certainly was, though it's some years back now...however, the same rationale and market-forces would seem to be in place; As someone said to me THEN, "All you can do is ask...". I did, and immediately had multiple, alternative offers coming my way. Anyway, all of this is for "filing away" and pulling out later for consideration, IF things go that way...)
