The Sunday Blog, Week Eight

The Sunday Blog comes at you after a perfect Saturday off. The only bad thing is that it’s over.

1. There are a lot of reasons why I don’t gamble. Saturday was definitely one of them. It looked to me like the lock of the year was FSU giving only 6½ points to an awful Georgia Tech team. Unless it was third-ranked Utah being an underdog at 3-3 USC. How do these guys know things that I don’t? I guess I can take solace in the fact that they set the over/under for Missouri-Vanderbilt way too high at 34.

2. The amazing thing about the Tech Kick-Six — wait. just about everything about it was amazing — was that both Paul Johnson and one of his teammates signaled to Lance Austin to “get away” from the ball. But Austin glanced back over his shoulder and realized the blocked kick was not being covered by the Semis. So he picked it up and ran for a touchdown.

3. One of my favorite coaches in college football is Mike Leach, who is a regular contributor to the Bob Dooley Invitational. His Washington State team is now 5-2 with road wins at Oregon and Arizona after a season-opening loss to Portland State. Luke Falk probably won’t get a lot of Heisman consideration but he has 26 TD passes. Not bad.

4. Um, Auburn, um, is 100th in the nation in defense. I know that defensive stats get fluffed up by multiple-overtime games, but, um, Auburn is ranked 100th in total defense. And yet, the thing that stood out the most to me in Saturday’s loss to Arkansas was that Auburn’s receivers dropped eight passes. If they catch, they win.
