The Sunday Blog, Week Four

The Sunday Blog comes at you after one of the most fun weekends I can remember with great friends and one amazing football finish.

1. One thing about the aftermath of Florida’s improbable 28-27 win over Tennessee — the Gator players get that they have a long way to go to be a really good football team, even if they are 4-0 and suddenly ranked. “I’ve got to play a lot better throughout the game,” said Will Grier when it was over. He wasn’t very good for a lot of the game, but you can’t help but think that the win and the finish will help his maturation process. And here is where I point out what I forgot to point out in Sunday’s column. Brandon Powell deserves a lot of credit for getting in the way of three Tennessee defenders on Antonio Callaway’s 63-yard catch-and-run.

2. Nice Saturday for the state of Arizona. The Sun Devils and Wildcats were hosting the Californians and it did not go well. Arizona State and Arizona lost to USC and UCLA by a combined 98-44. Does anybody play defense out there? Kind of ruined my late-night plans that ASU-USC was such a blowout. Oh well, I just rewatched Florida-Tennessee a few times.

3. There’s always one score that blows you away on a college football weekend and this was it Saturday.

Utah 62.

Oregon 20.

Say what? Columnist for the Oregonian John Canzano wrote “The Ducks have lost their cool and been stripped of their swagger.” So which quarterback is missed more — Marcus Mariota or Nick Marshall? Discuss.

4. And in another example of why the coaches’ poll has to go, the Ducks are still ranked in the top 25. Just stupid.
