The Sunday Blog comes at you early in the morning from Lexington, Ky., where the bourbon was strong and the Gators celebrated once again in Commonwealth.
1. This was the kind of college Saturday that keeps bringing us back. So many great games and so many wild finishes whether it was BYU-UCLA, Texas-Cal, Ole Miss-Alabama or even UConn-Missouri. We had Kliff Kingsbury calling out Bret Bielema and Urban Meyer looking like his dog died after a win. (We’ve seen that before, during the 2009 season). I think the biggest stunner of the weekend was Stanford’s upset of Southern Cal. I don’t think the Trojans are prime-time ready.
2. The biggest moment in Steve Spurrier’s coaching career came when Florida beat FSU 52-20 to win the national title, Coincidentally, the score of the game that may drive him out of the game was 52-20. The hapless Gamecock defense makes you wonder how they are going to get bowl eligible. I don’t see it and I can’t see the HBC coming back after a losing season. You allow a quarterback who was teetering on the edge of heading to the bench to complete 24-of-25 passes and you have a lot of problems. And the South Carolina defense has not forced a punt in the first half all season. This from former Gamecock D.J. Swearinger on Twitter — “Yeah that was my last time watching Carolina prolly. I’ll watch when I hear they playing like Carolina and not the weakest team in SEC.”
3. Oh, D.J., there are other contenders. Arkansas has apparently forgotten that the season has started (and that its strength is running the ball) and Auburn has gone from national champion contender to national punchline. With all of these new defensive coordinators, I tried to warn you that they were still coaching the same players. Let’s not rush to judgment but look at Auburn’s schedule. We may come to find out that the win over Jacksonville State last week allowed the Tigers to go to the Birmingham Bowl.
4. Let’s not crown Leonard Fournette as the Heisman winner quite yet. Can we please get out of September first? He had some Heisman moments against Auburn, but anything can happen, especially with the fickle Heisman voters. But I do know that I have circled Nov. 21 on my calendar. That’s when Ole Miss and LSU tangle.
