Tim Tebow grades out as a champion by making the NFL record books in his first NFL start for the 3-10 Denver Broncos. Little Timmy failed to win in his debut, but he showed flashes of brilliance by making 8 completions in 16 attempts for 138 yards and 1 TD passing and 8 attempts for 78 yards and 1 TD rushing. His 100.5 passer rating far exceeded the debut passer rating for the other NFL rookies drafted this year. Let us not get ahead of ourselves and anoint Timothy Richard Tebow as the Holy One of NFL quarterbacks, but we should be excited for Timmy. Tebow was only the third player to...READ MORE

Yeah, but of all the expressions to use, "graded out a champion"--sure that's the one ya wanted there? I wasn't sure how to take it, E-... (Still not sure--was that the idea?)

I left that interpretation up to the reader. Besides, how much longer will I get to use that line?

P.S. Timmy did great, but he is not done yet.

The boy definitely needs a better line to protect him. And as time goes on he will be more comfortable in the NFL pocket. He rushed a few plays and didn't allow them to develop, but that's to be expected from a rookie. He needs to work on selling the play action better too. A blind kid in the upper deck could have sniffed out that fake to Moreno. All nerves though. In the end, he did much better than the average rookie would have. I firmly believe he will develop into a great NFL QB.

Maybe someone can explain that phrase - "Graded out a champion."

To me, that implies someone has made the grade of champion, but I've also seen it used here to suggest someone has been graded as NOT being a champion.

Is this some phrase specific to not-Canada?

After each victory, Meyer would announce certain players who "graded out as champions." Supposedly they had an exemplary game. But as the season wore on we saw that the same guys graded out as champions every time despite playing mediocre at best. It gave the impression that the staff has pet favorites that could do no wrong in their eyes. So the term "grading out as a champion" kind of started to be a joke.

Thanks for explaining that for me, Zooker. I just failed to execute. Or, maybe I'm just not that good. You, however, grade out as a champion.

Yeah, "F/G", we just hit a level of frustration with Meyer et al as the season wore on that we had to find ways of shrugging it off somehow--and (thanks in large part to Coach M's strange grading standards and Escambia'94's ironic humor) this has become one of our glib catch-phrases.

Sarcasm! Gotcha. I'm almost fluent in sarcasm, but there are subtleties of dialect that even the most discerning listener/ready will miss. :p
