Welcome to the ‘Era of the Gator’

From Buddy's Blog
So I’m officially declaring the last 18 years as ‘”The Era of the Gator.” And I’m not even counting basketball. Just the three in football.
Just considering titles awarded by the Associated Press or the BCS championship, since 1990 nobody else has won as many national football championships as Florida.

Nice reading; if Foley has common sense he'll do all he can to keep quality coaches in Gainesville like Urban Meyer and Billy Donovan.

Even more promising is that our women's sports teams are moving up the line; Amanda Butler has our Lady Gators basketball team ranked for the first time in a LONG time, we have awesome women's soccer, our softball team iis in a position to repeat their performance of last season (they were the runner-up in the Women's College World Series), and we have a top-10 gymnastics team as well.

I also liked Buddy's last paragraph about recruiting; Coach Meyer wants not only the best players, but also the right ones. He doesn't want anybody coming on board who could have disciplinary or academic issues, who has the wrong attitude or can't mesh with the team - it's not just about the athletic skiils. In other words, he wants to avoid an exercise in futility, and many Gator fans don't realize that.

Exactly! The total package or fugetaboutit. Those that have de-committed did not fit the criteria that has been lain down for success. I for one trust UM's judgment on such matters and have no qualms when a 5 star commit says no thanks.

Urban Meyer finally has our football program going in the right direction and at the level he wants and expects. The last thing he needs are players who will be disruptive, uncooperative or just plain "cancers" in the locker room.

It's not just about the "stars"; it's about (1) other charateristics and (2) the coaching - Zook may have attracted and sold the 4-and-5-star talent on UF but because he was inept let that talent go to waste.

The right coach can push a player who wasn't highly regarded by Rivals and Scout a step further; for example, in spite of his "party-boy" reputation and the fact that he wasn't highly recruited out of high school, Steve Spurrier managed to get Rex Grossman to perform at his peak.

That being said though, a talented player in the wrong hands will either deteriorate or underperform - case in point Chris Leak. Zook did nothing to further his cause, and it took Meyer's effort and coaching-up to repair his mechanics and get him playing at the level he was capable of.
