Well said, E-.
Now, I understand the allure of the "Cinderella", that whole "Hoosiers"-thing, but two caveats are being raised this time around:
First, that "just 5-players"-reality means, due to a number of factors, that the whole "Cinderella-story" isn't so unusual or rare after all--one or two really top young guys and/or a good little supporting-cast-of-a-team getting hot at the right time and, well, we seem to get one or two going deeper than anyone expected every year now...this time the big surprise from last year (Butler) is BACK, so maybe they're not some "little David facing Goliaths" after all, lazy sportswriters be damned.
Meanwhile, a team from one of the play-in games, just "fill-ins" as much for the sake of increased revenue as for some vague idea of "symetry"--"Shouldn't even BE here!", say some--are in the Final Four! Fun and interesting or not, no one is going to convince me that VCU is one of the 4 most talented college basketball teams in America. I see that the whole March Madness thing is a brilliant, rollicking extravaganza , a part of our Spring now, and well timed, sportswise, at that--but maybe THIS is why there's a limit to how far you expand it--and maybe that limit has been exceeded.
Second, LET THIS BE A LESSON to future discussion as to a championship playoff in college football.
Despite the fact that the very complex and elaborate inter-connectedness of all the player-specialists all over the field and on both sides of the ball makes any similar kind of craziness in BCS-level NCAA Football impossible, when that day finally comes (and it will come, eventually) that we get a true play-off system, there will inevitably be those who are unhappy with it not being "inclusive" enough--and the pressures to widen the championship field will grow each year from new quarters where fans and alumni feel their program "should have and would have made it if only" etc., etc.
Y'all say "No way!" now, but I'm telling you, it'll start with maybe 8 teams (personally, I'm for 6, with BCS #1 and #2 each getting a first-round bye--it's a way of keeping the bowls and answering other opponents' objections), and the screaming will start to expand it almost immediately.
Just remember: in addition to the fact that these young bodies just can't be put through THAT many extra games at the end of an already tense, grueling season, it is also true that while the talent may be pretty even, there IS a fall-off in proven performance from the top to bottom of the first ten teams' ranked order--THAT'S what the whole season's been about. If you can't manage to be at or near the very top, then you just have to accept however the chips fall in that "gray area". Missed out this time? Next time make sure you're so good the issue isn't in doubt.
Yeah, I know, I'm WAY ahead of myself here.
But hey, our little roundball-run is over, I don't really get into either the NBA or MLB 'till it really starts looking like it counts for something, we're hardly getting ANYTHING out of spring Gator-practice--so why not a bit of reflection on the future, in light of what THIS tournament is showing us?
