chill out. Don't boo him just yet. Bob stoops didn't have any head coaching experience before he got to OU either. look at him now. I'm happy. Now just get us a decent oC (Kerwin Bell or the Ok State OC) and i'll be good.

Boooooooo
Not a good hire. If the Gators wanted to go with a defensive-minded coach, foley could have easily got Strong to come back and be the head coach. I dont see Muschamp having very much clout in keeping our recruiting class intact and getting other recruits excited about Gator football.

I just heard this on ESPN radio, too. What happened to the big name guys???? BTW, who did Texas stop this year, anyway???

I'm stoked. Time for more booze.

I understand the lack of excitement. But who did people really think we were going to hire?

Stoops - we had no chance
Mullen - see my post in the other thread
Strong - why leave after one year? plus if uf wanted him as head coach they could have hired him instead of meyer
Petrino - he's cooking at ark
Petersen - he was never leaving
Patterson - his team will be in the big east why leave
Malzahn - flashy hire but no stout d-cordinators out there (we don't have a charlie strong on our staff)
Sumlin - good offense bu they didn't have that good of a season

I'm not even going there with NFL coaches.

IMHO it is easier for a defensive coach to get a good to great OC than the other way around.

I guess Foley thinks we got the next Bob Stoops. Time will tell. I'm just glad the search is over. I hope he gets good OC.

Hey, if we are going to hire someone with no Head Coaching experience, why didn't we hire Kerwin Bell, who does have the experience??? And is already recruiting in Florida.

Is it that Foley cannot see the forest for the trees?

Let's hold off on the criticism until we hear something about recruits, assistants, etc. Muschamp is a good D coordinator and, as someone who had to suffer through all the Texas games this year because his wife is a UT alum, he did a lot with no help from the offense and poorer-than-usual talent this year.

This is certainly a departure from the offense first tilt previous headcoaches had though.

The reason I like the hire most of all though is that Muschamp brings some fire to the sideline that Urban lacked - this year in particular. When Muschamp's defenses are getting after plays, it's gonna be scary with SEC defensive talent.

i did read that his defense was ranked 7th last year even with the offense turning the ball over 30 times. dont hold me to those stats though. now we need a good o coordinator.

I say give the guy a chance. Sure we were all hoping for some great offensive genius to be the new HC, but he knows the defensive side very well.

Here is hoping for a good OC to go along with him.

im kind of excited to get a good defensive coach, as long as he hires the right guys to make the offense work. i hope its still a spread since thats what we have the athletes for.

Because our defense has been the concern recently.....I understand the idea, but wont drink the kool-aid. As it stands, our offense is going to be filled with young players and have no identity. I really hope we get a good OC

He's a "D"-Mastermind--but he BETTER bring in a hot young OC or we're screwed: as I just noted on another thread (I was going over the various rumors out there when the news came through on my phone), Texas' offense was every bit as bad, possibly WORSE (less confusion but NO playmakers) than ours this past season, and that their OC Greg Davis (while almost as despised and criticized here as Addazio at UF) is not as stubbornly inflexible as our guy, so as far as the "O" (NOT Muschamp's area of expertise) is concerned, he's facing even bigger problems than he would have had he been taking over there, as promised.
For us, the questions on offense ALL remain unchanged, unsolved pending Muschamp's now stupendously crucial upcoming (hopefully next) hire.
On the good side, Will Muschamp is a young, high energy guy, full of passion and fire to go with a dynamic and innovative approach to playing defense. With the right guy in there as the OC with full power and control OVER that offense, this could work out well, but as I've already noted, that leaves us with only half our biz concluded. It worries me. We need that filled PRONTO to help solid Driskell AND in general assuage the fears and worries and wandering eyes of our prospective recruits ASAP.
I didn't know Muschamp had as much as grown up in G-ville, spending 10 of his formative years there, but I DID know he was from that Saban "coaching-heredity-tree", which doesn't exactly bode well for the Urban-stays-to-advise reality, it would seem. There are a LOT of aspects that make this a risk, another "all-in" gamble from J. Foley, who's made such bets before; they haven't all been successful, but when they are, they are wildly so.
The most surprising part to me, along with how quickly it all happened, is how Muschamp was reportedly the first considered and only one contacted for the job. I can't help shaking the feeling that concern about recruiting may have played a part in the rush (and as I mentioned, that massive no-show this weekend of expected recruits can only have goosed such worries), but we DID have our choice, and there WERE some good people out there and not to have even inquired about some of them I find surprising at the LEAST; I have to figure there is more to this story than we are hearing about at this point. Foley is no fool. One way or another, he knew some things regarding those other guys and their availability.
However, again: this leaves us with a large problem still hanging in the air, "What about the offense? Who will be the OC?" That will HAVE to be answered very quickly.
Meanwhile, there are two aspects of this announcement that I LOVE. Somewhere out there about 90 miles south of me, Escambia'94 is laughing with me on this one: UT and the Longhorn not-so-faithful are getting this right now out in the bars and clubs on 6th St. Muschamp is the one constant, their saving grace in the middle of what has turned into a nightmare for these we-are-entitled-to-superiority fans. They JUST went from the BCS title game to a losing record and no bowl, and we take their coach-in-waiting!
The other thing is the timing of the announcement: it will be forever denied, but the fact still remains that this was released everywhere just 1/2 hour before the Heisman Award Show was scheduled to be aired live.
Umm, "Ooops!" just doesn't quite ring true, ya know? Sorry, Cam (lol).

RUMOR: The OC will be Major Applewhite. Meh. At least he knows what a forward pass looks like.

(laughing) Let's just screw 'em completely!:cowboy:

But you raise an interesting point: where WILL he go for his staff? He doesn't want anyone from that failed staff just released here in Austin. That's another factor that's different from last time, part of what made a Petersen or a Whittingham attractive possibilities (and more like the case with Meyer, BTW). If there was anything to that buzz about the Stoops/Bell package, any chance Foley puts a "Kerwin-bug" in his ear? Just throwing that out there.
