University of Florida guard Nick Calathes (Casselberry, Fla./Lake Howell High School) was honored by the Southeastern Conference as its Freshman of the Week Monday after guiding the Gators to a pair of lopsided victories last week.
Calathes averaged 22.0 points, 9.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game for the Gators, who picked up wins over Jacksonville and Florida A&M.
He opened the week with 24 points, nine assists and six steals in the Gators’ win over the Dolphins on Monday. The 24 points was a career high and the highest total by a Gator freshman since Matt Walsh dropped 29 points on Dec. 28, 2002.
Two days later he flirted with a triple-double against Florida A&M, scoring 20 points, dishing out nine assists once again, and coming up with eight rebounds.
For the week he knocked down 7-of-11 three-point attempts and hit 9-of-11 free throws. Calathes is averaging 15.6 points, 6.0 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game on the year.
