Florida Gators vs. South Carolina Gamecocks tonight

The Florida Gators men’s basketball team look to improve their overall record to 18-6 (and 7-3 in the SEC) tonight in Columbia, South Carolina as the Gators battle it out on the hardwood against the Gamecocks. The Gators won their previous matchup against the Gamecocks 58-56 about 2 weeks ago when Chandler Parsons hit a buzzer beater.

The Gators have won 6 of their last 7 SEC games – yet they are still unranked – I’m not sure a win over South Carolina (13-9) will get them there either. I expect a higher scoring game this time around… guys like Alex Tyus and Erving Walker have been on a tear lately putting up 20 ppg in what seems like every other game.

Tipoff is at 8:00 PM and the game will be aired on the SEC Network.

We did OK in the first half of the game but tanked it in the second. Too many turnovers and stupid fouls.

66-57 South Carolina with just a little over 1 minute left to go. CRAP.

My Recap: http://www.gatorenvy.com/2010/02/gators-lose-crucial-sec-game-to-south-carolina/

The Florida Gators were leading almost the entire game, but were clearly outplayed in the second half by South Carolina and ultimately lost to the Gamecocks last night by a final score of 71-77. We kept hearing about how great Devan Downey is all week and he didn’t disappoint last night. He torched the Gators for 24 points and nabbed 4 steals. The Gators now fall to 17-7 overall and 6-4 in the SEC.

The Gators lost this game because of turnovers and their inability to make free throws. We turned the ball over 20 times compared to South Carolina’s 6 – you just can’t do that and expect to win ball games. Coming into the game, the Gators were the second best free throw shooting team in the SEC, but last night they shot like the worst. They were 10-23 from the line and missed every free throw when it counted. You can’t shoot 43% from the line and expect to win.

Note from the game:
- Erving Walker led the Gators with 20 points.
- Alex Tyus had a double-double for UF, notching 11 points and 15 rebounds. He also had 3 blocks
- Parsons had 13 points, 11 rebounds
- Kenny Boynton had 13 points

Florida returns home to face Xavier on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Elsewhere in cyberspace, the aftermath of last night's game is turning into a Dan Werner hatefest. Even though he fouled out and didn't score any points, he wasn't the only one shooting himself in the foot out there. That second half on the Gators' part was just plain SLOPPY and there was no excuse for it.

Lots of turn overs and missed free throws. We can erase this with at least 3 wins coming against Xavier, Vandy, Tenn, & Kentucky.
