Notes from practice 8/04

The Palm Beach Post put up a couple of good notes on their website from yesterday's practice.

  • Ronnie Wilson, who missed all of last season for the University of Florida while serving a disciplinary suspension, started his bid for a comeback bright and early Monday. He only has walk-on status now and is working to officially rejoin the team. Wilson was unavailable for comment after the 6 a.m. session for freshmen only, but did release a brief statement through the university in which he apologized for his actions and was thankful for another chance.
  • Also notable from the morning practice was the speed of freshman Jeffrey Demps. Demps, also a track athlete, caught a pass and took off downfield, leaving linebackers and corners in the dust. The play elicited a joyful scream of "Speed, speed, speed!" from Meyer.
  • In the afternoon session, the focus was on wide receiver Percy Harvin. The junior star had heel surgery in the spring but has recovered and will be ready to play. He practiced lightly, not running at full speed and skipping some drills. Meyer said he was not concerned about Harvin's heel, but instead another part of Harvin's body reacting negatively to the surgery. Before having surgery, Harvin experienced pain in his knee and hip, and at the time Meyer said it was caused by Harvin compensating for the heel.
  • Meyer moved freshman wide receiver T.J. Lawrence to safety to help out Florida's thinnest position. Meyer also expressed confidence that freshmen Will Hill and Ahmad Black would be able to handle the load.
  • Defensive lineman Torrey Davis and safety Bryan Thomas were not listed on the roster handed out at practice. Meyer said Davis was "dealing with some academic issues and other issues," while Thomas was rehabbing from having a cyst removed from his knee and should not be sidelined for any significant amount of time.
