OGGOA: Gators adopt “if one falls, all fall” mentality

"Florida Gators head coach Urban Meyer is looking to put an end to the seemingly never-ending black eyes being placed on his program with each subsequent arrest of a University of Florida football player. With 28 legal issues under his tenure to-date, Meyer and his coaches held an emergency meeting with the players on Monday, a source close to the team told OGGOA.

The coaching staff took turns verbally lambasting the team and letting it be known how, more than ever, accountability and responsibility were important to the program this offseason. Then, as former Florida football player Brady Ackerman first disclosed via Twitter on Monday, they stressed that – from this point going forward – the team would be held accountable as a group for any individual missteps. As OGGOA’s source put it, the Gators are adopting an “if one falls, all fall” mentality that was taught in practical application immediately after the impassioned meeting."

Interesting, but mature, conversation on topics concerning Gator sports and other things. We're a small community, but growing.

How is the site on Inside information or scoops on the sports programs, recruiting, articles, etc??

As far as inside information, we won't publish anything from the subscription-only parts of "pay" sites that is meant to stay there because of copyright rules. I myself keep up with the latest news about Gator sports from Twitter as well as other sites and "free" articles I see elsewhere.

OGGOA is one site I view frequently to get the latest Gator news; Adam does a very good job there and writes informative articles.

This policy seems like it has the potential to really help turn around the tide of legal incidents amongst the roster. Kudos to Meyer and his staff for putting this in place, and especially for the staff wide manner is appears to have been implemented in during that team meeting. Good for them for doing it and now here's to the Gators for making sure that the program works going forward.

Like I mentioned in my latest blog article, as much as I'm not keen on seeing the innocent suffer on account of the guilty the emphasis is being put on the team as a whole - if our guys can start looking out for each other, do all they can to discourage and avoid any further problems and start living their off-field lives the right way then it's all for the best. I'm also glad Coach Meyer was proactive on implementing this as well; if in the long run it proves to be a deterrent to misbehaving then we'll know it was effective.

What I would love to see come out of this program, beyond a reduction in offenses, is that the players really do bond as a team. There was such a massive drain of leadership during this off season that a great deal of the Gators identity has disappeared. I think that if this new policy can really succeed in making the players look out for one another off the field that we will all see a much tighter team take the field this fall. A team that has really accelerated the process of learning to trust one another and rely on the team to win games instead of individuals. A cohesive, team first mentality can really help them out.

As for the good being punished for the actions of the bad, I don't adhere to that notion in my day to day life and I don't really agree with it. However, I can see both sides of the coin and will concede the benefits of such a policy in a situation such as our football team. Time will tell how it pans out, but I'll still applaud the coaching staff for changing things up in a significant manner - on paper at least, again time will tell - to try and make an impact on the team.

Agreed on both points. As much as the innocent players feel angry and humiliated, the stronger they are as a team and the more supportive of each other they can be will work to everybody's benefit. Distractions in the locker room cause friction, and a house divided amongst itself cannot stand.

Coach Meyer also needs to remind them once again that if they want to be treated like adults, they need to start acting like adults. It only takes one, or a few, bad apples to spoil it for the rest of the bunch, but it doesn't have to be this way.
