Under Armour Game

WANT to see it, but gotta "thing", one of those dreaded "social obligations" I've got to attend this eve...I do have a secret selfish, evil plan that involves my new smartphone (isn't THIS why I got the damn thing???), its satellite sports subscription and (if necessary) multiple trips to the restroom--but that IS the kind of "weird, boorish behavior" that habitually puts me in the doghouse. Ought to be able to grab some glimpses, anyway. Really want to watch Driskel and the receivers work some in that kind of situation.

And Muschamp really needs to put in some overtime work to get Clowney. That kid is a beast as well. Chickillo is looking great in the game too. Both of them are always in the backfield. But Clowney is bigger and faster. I'd be happy to land either of them though.

Jadeveon Clowney is a monster out there. If we can pick him up, we're going to have a pretty strong secondary

Gorman's a really good pick-up; I think he's rated something like the third best overall prospect by a couple of the services. And, like Zooker, I'd take EITHER Clowney OR Chickillo (better shot at the latter, I know--which in Clowney's case MUST have to do with prior relationships, 'cause he'd fit right into the CHOMP's whole aggressive, explosive high-profile defensive attack, if he bothered to take another look/think).
Only caught short stretches of Under Armor; main thing was seeing Driskel on something besides a highlight reel--and of course seeing that it didn't make much difference: that's the way this kid plays all the time, it seems: Oh, we have got to get this kid on the field! Weis must be drooling over him like he was a bag of White Castle's (I guess variations on that theme will be old hat soon--I say it with affection, though: We can laugh, 'cause he's OUR "Big Man" now!--whereas with everyone else it'll just be sour grapes...).

QB Jeff Driskel gets an A from me not only for his performance in the Under Armour All American Game, but also his leadership and support for the past year. He is a natural leader, and players seemed to rally around him. They also like to have fun around him. He does tend to force the ball into tight spaces. He can make the throws, but his receivers will need to be strong enough to fight off aggressive cornerbacks trying to wrestle the ball out. On one play he was most certainly getting sacked, but he wrestled away from a defender, and still fired a 60-yard pass on the run that was perfect...and dropped. He is strong, too. He outwrestled several defenders about 15 yards back who nearly ripped off his jersey only to escape and get tackled right at the LOS. Play of the day: he was being flushed, got a block from A.C. Leonard, and he just took off for a 63-yard run. I give him an A.

TE A.C. Leonard has the size, skills, and chemistry to be Driskel's go-to guy. He took a cheap shot early in the game (from a SOW commit). BTW the refs should have called a penalty on that--these guys are still high schoolers and they are all away from home. Play of the day: He did recover well enough to block for Driskel on JD's 63-yard run. He gets an A.

S Jabari Gorman looked good from what I could see. He has great HS stats. Play of the day: committing to Florida on TV and doing the Gator chomp with mom and dad. Let's give him an A-.

CB De’Ante “Pop” Saunders gained no defensive stats, but he did return a punt 15 yards in his play of the day. No on-TV commitment. No grade.

CB Marcus Roberson made an INT and a tackle. No on-TV commitment. No grade.

DE Anthony Chickillo was the game MVP and actually out-performed headliner Clowney. Play of the day: every time he lined up. This kid is a beast at DE--and he's white! He gets an A+. He is torn between Miami and Florida for commitments. If you happen to see him in G'ville this weekend, be sure to give him a warm welcome and maybe sway his opinion.

Driskel is the real deal: he's fated to be the face of "The New Gator Offense" (look for this future cover-story from SI)--and as early as next mid-season, possibly, if everything goes that way (although admittedly I think Weis would RATHER he had a year with Driskel first, letting him watch, learn and fill-out, preferably redshirting while Brantley holds the fort and the rest of the hybrid pro offense is installed).
I am COUNTING on CHOMP pulling in at least one SHUT DOWN DE--Chuckillo would fit the bill perfectly, but one way or another we HAVE to get one--and a PAIR of "bookends" would close the only major hole in our "D". It's just that really good ones are rare, we haven't had one in a while and it shows: good running teams have been able to wear us down and begin to break containment later in the game, able to drive, burn the clock and sometimes even score to take a close game. That should not happen--WE need to dominate the line of scrimmage from the first play-from-scrimmage, on BOTH sides of the ball.
The good news is that both CHOMP and Weis put that exact kind of domination at the top of their lists of philosophical and practical priorities. While each has his own unique, evolving and well-considered approach to this goal, not surprisingly both begin with a foundation of basics, of course: big strong fast guys getting it done in the trenches. They know it's the key to making all the rest work.
So I expect to see some HARD runs made at a few of the very best of these young giants, no matter WHAT their prior leanings or stated preferences--our staff is like an all-star recruiting team, PLUS they carry with them an image, the alluring power and attraction of the NFL implied in so much and so many of their backgrounds. These coaches don't even have to belabor the matter, it's "out there" in the media-at-large and in the "buzz", the awareness of recruits and family members talking among themselves and each other. Finally of course there's the well-established power and first-class reputation of the University of Florida and its Gator Football Program itself, the "branding" that Urban Meyer & Co. have further established and polished over the last 6 years as an annual player among the elite.
Even out here where I am in Longhorn Country folks are well-aware of the situation: I have a LOT of people telling me that "unless Coach Boom manages to raid US and take a few of his Texas-recruits over with him, it's late in the game" and his first REALLY BIG class will come NEXT year. I'm not so sure he and his guys can't still go "Top 5" this year--but I agree that they'll be damn near unstoppable with the next class. As I've said here, this time it's all about filling in certain particular "spaces" on either side of the ball.

it may be late in the game but he still has time to smooth things over with current decommits and those wavering... he may not be able to pull in any new recruits, but we'll see. All I can say is damn it's great to be a gator!

Driskel is a boss.

You guys are right, Chickillo is not a man, he is a machine. Whoever gets him is getting a solid player.

Since Meyer retired, I heard that Pop Saunders and Nick Waisome were both looking at FSU. If my info is correct, Saunders is enrolling early at UF, so he should stay with us. But I think Waisome is now gonna be at FSU. Anybody have any info on this?

Although nobody's rumors seem to be correct lately, here is what I have heard:
- Saunders is pretty much a lock to FSU
- Waisome has shown no signs of anything but FSU
- Chickillo is leaning towards Miami, but can still be stolen last minute

Will Muschamp has hidden his actions very well, so whatever happens next with recruiting will be a pleasant surprise.
