Meyer trying to keep Wilson aboard

James Wilson wants to transfer to Wake Forest. Urban Meyer thinks the redshirt freshman offensive lineman might be better off remaining at Florida.

Meyer said during his pre-spring news conference Wednesday that he has not given up on trying to talk Wilson out of his decision to leave. Wilson asked UF for his release last week, but Meyer isn't ready to grant it yet.

"All young people go through issues," Meyer said. "We're not going to stop trying to get him to come back because he's a quality guy. I think he could be a heck of a player.

"He's not practiced once at the University of Florida (due to injuries). He's going through a funk like a lot of young people do. At the end of the day,

I'm going to do what's best for him because he's a good person.

"Absolutely, I'm trying to get him to come back. I've talked to him; no promises have been made. Florida is a hell of a place."

Wilson had knee surgery last fall and sat out the 2007 season. Meyer said a sprained knee will prevent Wilson from practicing this spring if he decides to return.

If Wilson goes through with his decision to transfer, he would have to sit out the 2008 season, per NCAA transfer rules. If he does not receive a release from UF, he would not be eligible until the 2010 season.

In trying to convince Wilson to stick it out at Florida, Meyer pointed out four other UF offensive linemen who contemplated quitting in recent seasons, but eventually decided to stay and things worked out. Meyer also cited a time when he tried to quit as a 17-year-old who had recently signed a professional baseball contract with the Atlanta Braves.

"Jason Watkins, Jim Tartt, Drew Miller and Steve Rissler. ... we had four offensive linemen who quit multiple times (but came back and became starters)," Meyer said. "Your head coach at the University of Florida signed a contract with Atlanta and went down there and quit.

"It was great when I called home and told my dad I'm quitting. He said, 'Great, you're a grown man now, you can make your own decisions.' He said, 'By the way, don't you ever step foot in this house again, where there are no quitters.' "

Wilson was a five-star recruit coming out of St. Augustine Nease, where he had been teammates with UF quarterback Tim Tebow. He originally committed to Southern Cal, but switched to Florida late in the recruiting process.

He told numerous media outlets last week that he wanted to transfer to Wake Forest, where four of his former high school teammates play football.
Wilson is still in classes at UF.

Another troubled player, sophomore defensive tackle Torrey Davis, appears to be back in good standing with Meyer after being suspended from team activities last month.

"He's with the team," Meyer said. "He's got a lot of work to do academically to make it here at the University of Florida. We knew that when we recruited him. He's got a long way to go.

"He's going to be at spring practice. He won't practice every day because he's got some other issues he's got to take care of."

I hope he sticks around.
